Duolingo: Free Language Education For The World

I’ve had classes in high school and college, and have even considered throwing down cash on an expensive program. Duolingo is a program that offers language training via their website or any of your devices. It’s up to you to decide how much you want to put in to it in order to make it useful. Also, it’s absolutely free.

How?! There is a 2 minute video explaining it, but the general idea is that by using their program you are helping them to translate content on the Internet. So everybody wins.

The program is available to learn Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian.

For the past week I have been using the Duolingo App during my train commute. I’m still on the early levels of the game. Answer all the questions correctly without losing your hearts and you can move on to the next level. I admit that I haven’t been giving myself enough credit as far as my Spanish skills are concerned, but I’ve also been surprised at the teaching method of this app. Things that I vaguely remember learning in high school are so much more clear to me through this simple method of playing a game.

Everything is available by logging on to the website (you can create an account or login with Facebook

or Google), but because the best time for me is during my commute I have primarily been using the app. You need a connection to load the level you are on, so as long as I load before I head into the Subway I can do the 3 lessons on a level without a connection.

Through the website you are able to connect with friends, update a feed, and challenge each other with the points you earn with your language skills. Because it’s available on multiple devices (available at The App Store and Google Play) it is always at your fingertips. I like being the one in control of when and where I’m doing the lessons, and it’s been a lot more useful that way.

I have high hopes for someday being able to answer in Spanish when somebody stops me on the street and assumes I’m a native speaker.
