Foodspotting is a relatively new geolocation guide for those looking for great food. Their website claims it is “the easiest way to find and share the foods you love.” The whole idea revolves around finding recommended dishes, not restaurants.

Foodspotting began in 2009 by a few founders who saw an opportunity in the market. There were many restaurant-locator apps, but there was nothing that let you find or rate specific dishes.

This new concept has developed into a profitable tool that allows people to see photos of nearby food dishes and allow users to rate them individually. Foodspotting hopes to encourage you to explore your surroundings and try out new restaurants and diners. Once you find a dish you want to eat, you bookmark it by clicking “Want it” so then you can later rate it or find ratings already on it. If you find a food dish you love, you can upload a photo and add it to a guide.

Foodspotting allows you to become very active and have fun with the app. You can make your own guides and compete in scavenger hunts and challenges to earn badges – a lot like Foursquare. You can also earn virtual tips for being a quality “foodspotter.”

Foodspotting has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that can work in any city, town, or country. Since it launched in January of last year, there have been about 300,000 foods that have been “spotted” around the world. They are currently available on the iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, and Android.

As more of a testament to its growth and potential, Foodspotting announced that they have scored $3 million in their first venture funding in a round led by BlueRun Ventures. With this money they hope to hire more developers, include expert recommendations, and display deals or specials going on at restaurants.
