Has Pinterest Already Lost Its “Cool” Factor?

Pinterest is growing like crazy. It’s the cool new social network that Google+ wishes it were. In just over a year, it has amassed over 10 million registered users and 2 million of those people use it every day. But apparently to some of most hip early adopters, the site already is uncool, or at least starting to become so. Business Insider published some anecdotal evidence to prove this point. Many early users have said that Pinterest used to be a way for people to discover cool new sites, blogs, recipes, and the like. But now all the new users do is re-pin, or post, material from other users. So the early users are only seeing photos that they have already seen before and are getting bored.

I told this to my wife as I sat down to write this (I still haven’t joined) and she disagreed. She still thinks it’s a great place to discover exciting new things from around the web. While she does occasionally re-pin, she mostly posts stuff she finds on other sites. I imagine most users are like this. So don’t worry just yet – Pinterest is still cool and will probably still keep growing. As it grows, more and more new photos will become discoverable.

Interestingly, Pinterest’s growth is primarily driven by the fact that the majority of users are women. The site isn’t shy about this fact. It describes itself as a place where “people use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.” Sure men can do these, too, but they aren’t obsessed about pinning those things as women are. In fact, 97% of Pinterest’s Facebook fans are women and an estimated 83% of all Pinterest users are women.

And here’s some anecdotal evidence of my own: men haven’t joined the site en masse, but they’re about to. A while ago, I posted on How To Make a Manly Pinterest Page. There are plenty of things that guys can pin and not worry about their masculinity. A few of my guy friends have already joined, though they tend be the early adopter type. As for me, I’m this close to joining. In my opinion, Pinterest is getting cooler by the day.
