How big is the new iPad?

It would seem that Apple is confident they got it right with the first iPad 2 years ago. Despite rumors of 7″ iPad minis, or even pro iPads that are bigger than 10″. I’m not entirely sure why these rumors continue.

Steve jobs came out and said:

“There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.” – He called the competitors tweeners, and Dead on Arrival.

The third and newest iPad’s screen is the same dimension as it has always been.

Screen size and Screen resolution

The iPad has a 9.7″ diagonal LED backlit screen. The device itself is, and has been from the beginning 9.5″ tall, and 7.3″ wide.

The new iPad is the same physical size, but there are now 4 times as many pixels on the screen: 3.1 million. The actual resolution is 2048 pixels by 1536 pixels.

This is the biggest change. Even though the physical size hasn’t changed, the device itself is capable of so much more.

The third and newest iPad is slightly heavier

Weight change – The iPad is a little big heavier than the second generation iPad, about 8% heavier. But is still lighter than the original iPad released in 2010. Today’s iPad weighs in at 1.44 pounds (652 g).

The third and newest iPad is slightly thicker

Thickness change – The newest iPad is also a little thicker thanks to a new camera sensor. With a quality camera you need the lens to have distance from the sensor to capture a good amount light. The latest iPad has a much nicer camera than the previous generation, and so they made the top a bit thicker, and then it tapers toward the bottom.

Future models bigger, smaller?

There is no telling what the future holds for iPad sizes. But based on Steve Jobs comments, and my own experience with the Kindle Fire, and Galaxy Tab (7″ model) I am confident that we shouldn’t expect an iPad mini in the near future if ever.
