How To Use My Fitness Pal To Help With That New Year’s Resolution

It’s about that time again.  We’ve spent the last month gorging ourselves on turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, eggnog, booze, and cookies and baked goods as far as the eye can see.  I don’t know about you, but my pants are feeling a bit tighter than I’d like them to.  Bring on the New Year’s diet resolution!  I’ve got just the app to help you.

Rewind a bit to this last June.  I was shopping for new shorts and ended up despairing in a fitting room at Old Navy.  I had been in denial over the last 10 pounds I had never lost from when my daughter was born 3 months years (gah) earlier, but that day I came to a harsh realization.  I immediately went home and searched for an online calorie counter.  Life was going to change right then and there. No more fitness room breakdowns for me.  I came across the My Fitness Pal website and was immediately hooked.  By October I was down 9 pounds, with just a few more to go until I hit my goal weight. (Unfortunately thanks to Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas my progress basically stopped. I’ve almost never met a piece of pie or a sugar cookie I didn’t like.  Hence the reason I must go full steam ahead with the New Year’s resolution!)

You can use the website to set goals, track your calorie intake and exercise, as well as participate in community forums and receive motivation.  The actual website is great, but it isn’t entirely convenient to always have to log in on a computer.  Fortunately, My Fitness Pal has created mobile apps for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7, and now the iPad as well.  The apps provide full access to your account and sync up with the actual website, so whether you are logging on your phone or on the computer it will be consistent. There are a lot of different fitness/calorie counting apps available, but the My Fitness Pal app is my favorite.  Much like the website, the apps are straightforward and easy to use.  Best of all, they’re 100% free! So, no more excuses!  With the right tools 2012 may be the year you succeed at actually keeping your weight loss New Year’s resolution.
