Instagram Update for iOS and Android Adds a Myriad of Editing Controls

While there are hundreds of photo editing apps on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad, Instagram wants to be your one stop shop for taking, editing, and sharing photos. The latest update for both Android and iOS include a suite of new editing tools aimed at those who take mobile photography a bit more seriously.

Once you have the new version, not only will you be able to apply the traditional filters, but you’ll also be able to control the strength of each filter individually. There’s still the great Lux option, and the update still lets you control the strength of it, as well.

In addition to Lux, the existing filters, borders, and straightening options, Instagram has added manual control of the following:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Color Temperature (warmth)
  • Saturation
  • Highlights
  • Shadows
  • Vignetting
  • Tilt Shift
  • Sharpening

Most of the photos I take with my iPhone are taken with Camera+ and edited with the Snapseed and Luminance apps. With some of these added controls, I may find myself relying less on those other apps and doing everything within Instagram. Have you had a chance to check out the new editing tools yet? When you do, share you feedback in the comments below.
