Is Gorilla Glass scratch proof?

Nobody does Myth Busters the way ZAGG does Myth Busters. Just ask Drew and his Gorilla Glass scratch test. You need only Google Gorilla Glass Scratch Test, it’s a YouTube video.

Reporting from CES in a recent article, CNN posted that Gorilla Glass is thinner than ever. But it’s still…

Not any less resistant to breakage than the current Gorilla Glass, which may be disappointing news to anyone who has had to put up with a cracked screen after dropping a phone.

I WAS TOLD BY A CLOSE FRIEND. (heard that one before)
I’m the techy, geeky, computer-loving, iPhone-touting, invisibleSHIELD-Insisting, OCD one in the family. Obviously that means that for the most part everyone comes to me. However, last year my brother-in-law was told by a colleague at work that the iPhone used Gorilla Glass and would not scratch if he removed his Invisible Shield. So take it off he did.

A month later we were sitting at the dinner table, and he informed me that despite removing the phone from the shield, and constantly setting it on rough surfaces, it had not been scratched. He told me I should take the cover of my device, and enjoy it truly ‘naked’.

Never again. Seriously. I’m the techy, geeky, computer-loving, iPhone-touting, invisibleSHIELD-insisting, OCD one in the family. How could he have forgotten that? How could I have forgotten that?

Within a week of removing the invisibleSHIELD from my iPhone 4, I found scratches all over the back of the device simply from setting it down on my desk. And the one time I accidentally put the phone in my pocket with my keys resulted in a very large scratch from the speaker at the top of the screen diagonally towards the volume buttons for more than an inch.

So, Apple posts that the iPhone 4 is ‘ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever”, and consumers and even some tech bloggers trusted them.

The iPhone 4 has Gorilla Glass magic, right, and so can’t be damaged by us mere mortals? Sadly not; Gdgt’s Ryan Block has tweeted an image of a review iPhone 4 – apparently from the pocket of Josh Topolsky – that’s gained a few unsightly scratches in the few days its been in the wild.

The moral of the story from Slashgear?

The takeaway message is that, if you want your iPhone 4 to stay looking box fresh, consider an invisibleSHIELD front and back.
