Stop using “Password1″ – 84% of passwords are easily hacked.

According to CNN, the most popular way for hackers to crack your password isn’t by anything complex, it’s simply guessing your password. A company called Trustwave recently issued a report called the “2012 Global Security Report.” It had some very interesting findings that I’d share with you readers:

  • “Password1″ is the most popular password used by businesses and 5% of all passwords are some variation of the word “password”. Really?!
  • Easily guessable passwords are even more common. This accounts for 29% of all hacked passwords.
  • In security tests, Trustwave was able to crack 2.1 million out of 2.5 million passwords. That’s a success rate of 84%

If you take anything away from this post, it’s that your password probably isn’t strong enough! Scared yet? It’s easy to fix. There are several things you can do to make your password more complex. First, try making it longer. Even adding just one character increases the possibilities from a few trillion to a few quadrillion. Next, make sure you use a combination of upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers and symbols. This will help immensely in strengthening your password. If you’re still worried, it’s time to invest in a biometric scanner.
