Confirmation from other tech blogs
By now, we’re all confident that the iPad 3 will be announced on March 7th. If you want confirmation, can’t hope for much better than The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple:
According to sources who have been reliable in the past, Apple currently plans to hold their iPad 3 announcement on Wednesday, March 7, 2012.
But who cares. We already know exactly what’s going to be in the new iPad. The body has been leaked, the screen has been known for months, and the processor, and memory are obvious.
When can I buy it?
What we really want to know is when it will be available to purchase. Today, I don’t have any unique insights into the upcoming iPad. What I do have, is a look at the last couple product announcements and their corresponding availability dates.
- The iPhone 4 was announced on Monday June 7th, 2010. Then was made available in stores on Thursday, June 24th.
- When the iPad 2 was announced, on Wednesday March 2nd, it was made available in the US only 9 days later on Friday, March 11th.
Steve Jobs himself: “Just a beautiful product… so when are we going to ship it? April, May, June? No. March 11th.”
- The iPhone 4S was announced on Tuesday October 4th, and was made available in the US just 10 days later on Friday, October 14.
It seems that Apple is getting better at releasing devices right on top of their announcement, or (as with the iPhone 4S) they are simply saving the announcements until they’re capable of releasing the device right away.
A Friday availability seems likely. Get ready to line up late night on the 15th, and pack for a full day; we’re looking at an afternoon sale on Friday the 16th.
