The Modern Version Of The Mix Tape

Remember the good old days of compiling the most perfect songs on a mix tape or cd then giving it to a loved one? Me too, but only vaguely. A friend of mine said recently that “the mix tape/cd is a lost art form.” Is it? Or has it just changed? Of course we still have methods of creating the perfect mix. In fact, it’s so easy that we are starting to take it for granted. It isn’t the mix that made the mix tape special though, it was the gesture of giving it to somebody. Compiling the songs that describe the person, the relationship, or the greatest summer ever.

Here are some of the best ways to create and share your mix with your best friend or significant other. If you haven’t used these yet, give it a try. The format is different, but the magical feeling of listening to the mix created just for you hasn’t changed.

Of course Spotify. This is my go to music app, and there is a good reason for that. Add your library to theirs, create playlists, and share playlists. It’s really easy. Once you’ve created the perfect mix, you can share it via text, email, facebook, or your Spotify followers.

Of course, you can also make your playlist public or collaborative for others to enjoy or contribute to.

8tracks is the place to go if you want short playlists you can search through via tags. It’s also a great place to share your perfect mix. Once you’ve logged in, click on your photo and select Create Mix. From there you can upload your files, or search through their library. Their options are much more limited than Spotify if you don’t own the songs you’d like to add. Your mix needs to have at least 8 tracks and cannot have more than 2 tracks by the same artist. Add a photo that epitomizes the feeling of the mix, some tags and a description, and you’re good to go.

You have the option of making your mix public or private. If it’s private, only the people you send the link to will have access to it.

Everyone’s MixTape

This site is great. If the song you want is on youtube, then you can add it to your mixtape. They use the limits of tapes to keep your mix under control.

Everyones MixTape

They even have the scrolling tape while you are listening.

You do have the option of “listening” (watching) on YouTube instead of on the site, but I just don’t know why you’d choose that option. They also make it very easy to share. Just share the link and you’re good to go.

Unfortunately iTunes is really bad option for this. Apparently there used to be an option of gifting a playlist to somebody. Now you have to gift each song individually. Why would they take that away??

You do have the option of sharing your full playlist file.

iTunes Export

Just right click your playlist and select Export. You can then send that file to your friend to Import (File, Library, Import Playlist).

iTunes Import

This will only work for the songs that they already have in their library. They will get an error message for the songs they do not have, but you can share those individually if you’d like.

Give it a try. Put together those songs that perfectly describe someone and send them your modern version of a mix tape. Our format may have changed, but the feeling of receiving a mix that is made just for you is just as magical.
