The upcoming U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup qualifying match against rival Mexico on September 10 is one of the most highly anticipated soccer matches in North America. Being hosted in Columbus, Ohio, U.S. Soccer has used social media platforms and fans to motivate the team in a very non-conventional way, by bringing the fans messages and support directly to the players.
In the rise of social media platforms, the dynamic between athletes and fans changed drastically with fans being able to reach out and contact athletes at any time, but in a frenzy of tweets and Facebook messages, it’s easy for a fans outreach to get lost. Through a social media campaign using the hashtag #FanWall, U.S. Soccer gave fans the opportunity to send personal messages and photos that will be displayed on the walls of the tunnel leading to the field. The messages and photos will be the last thing the team sees before stepping out to the field to take on the Mexican Men’s National Team. Fans were encouraged to submit their most creative and patriotic ideas.
U.S. Soccer recently posted photos of the wall on Instagram and announced they were making the design bigger, encouraging fans to continue submitting their undying support. The image revealed so far includes the words “Home of the Brave” surrounded by the inspiring messages.
